Google ISP 1Gbps? Goodbye Comcast, & Verizon Fios

Original Article published by Cape Cod Web Design.

Google came on to the scene with it’s search engine in 1996 revolutionized the industry and has been growing feverishly ever since. Today Google announced it’s plans to begin experimenting with an ultra fast fiber optic network to bring high speed broadband to its users. Google announced that it initially plans to support around 50,000 people to start and work expand to half a million.

They haven’t however released details on where or when this network will be deployed however Cape Cod seems like a logical place because currently the Cape is only served by two major broadband companies Comcast & Verizon DSL. While Verizon does offer fiber-optic internet called FIOS; it has been quoted saying it will never deploy it on the Cape.

Google already has Search, Social Media & Cell Phones, why an ISP?

The website MacObserver says that Google may be trying to detract itself further from Microsoft. Google is after all in the content delivery business. Google’s ownership of a major and possibly growing network would concern Microsoft. Another motive is to put Comcast, AT&T and Verizon on notice that Google might be able to muster the muscle to seriously compete with them, and in doing so, enforce their own agenda for how a major fiber network should be operated.

Between now and March 26th, Google will be asking interested citizens & municipalities to provide us with information about their communities through a Request for information (RFI), which we’ll use to determine where to build our network.
